SIP Softswitch – Understanding The Technology
Among everyone who probably read about SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) services and definitions, many are not fully knowledgeable about the so-called SIP softswitch.
SIP softswitch? Find out more.
So let us take this opportunity to get to know this overlooked member of the SIP system. For some quick and short information review, SIP is a type of technology that makes use of the internet as the platform for phone calls to take place. In simple terms, instead of phone calls happening over the telephone lines, they are happening over internet connections.
So, within this entire process, where does the SIP softswitch lie?
First of all, in order for a telephone system to be connected to the internet and vice versa, they are interconnect through a softswitch. The softswitch is the main device that captures and controls all the signals created by the entire system, particularly the signals for phone calls made and received.
What happens is that the softswitch analyzes the signals that passes through it and then routes the signal to where it is intended to go. But, this is not all there is, as the softswitch actually also edits the properties of these signals.
Let’s say that a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) calls a SIP enabled telephone system. The softswitch will then convert the PSTN signal to be in IP-form so it can be accepted by the SIP telephone system.
And the same happens when it is the SIP telephone system that connects to a PSTN number.
This specific function of the SIP softswitch is the reason why more and more businesses and individuals alike are availing SIP services for themselves. Because the softswitch can alter signal properties, it can remove all possible long distance charges from phone calls being made even for thousands of miles away.
So now, do you understand exactly what a SIP softswitch is and how it functions?
