Is it possible to set up a wireless router without attaching it to a computer?

I want to set up wireless through a router without having to have my computer attached. I want to plug the router directly into an ethernet access point and then have wifi from it. Is this possible? If so, what is a product that provides this functionality? I need to set up the router without using my computer at all. A few minutes won't work. I can not connect my computer (via ethernet) to the router at all to set it up.

  1. You will have to plug the router in at first if for no other reason than to install the updated firmware and set up the network and security. Once you have done that however it is not necessary to have the router hooked up to a computer. Right now mine is actually in my room and only hooked up to my xbox. While I can't be sure that all routers work like this I believe most will and I know that the linksys wireless g ones definently do (as that is the one I have).
  2. you can run it without have a PC directly connected but you will have to connect your PC for a few minutes to configure the router! It should only take a few minutes! then you can just go wireless and disconnect your PC! good luck!
  3. Yes You should get something like a linksys wireless router that will give you a wifi access point. then if you don't have a wireless access card on ur comp then you will have to buy one. the wireless router will cost you about 70 dollars us. If you already have a router then you will only need to buy a wireless access point it will just broadcast your internet over the air. email me if you need more help. 4. 4 steps to set up your home wireless network You can use a wireless network to share Internet access, files, printers, and more. Or you can use it to surf the Web while you're sitting on your couch or in your yard. Plus, it's easier to install than you think. There are 4 steps to creating a wireless network: 1. Choose your wireless equipment 2. Connect your wireless router 3. Configure your wireless router 4. Connect your computers For Windows XP users, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not required for wireless networking, but it does make things much easier. Service Pack 2 also helps protect you against hackers, worms, and other Internet intruders. More information on how to is available from http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/wirelesssetup.mspx Hope this helps Pat
  5. Administering a router wirelessly rather than via cable is very convenient -- and very dangerous. Anyone who cracks your security (assuming you set up some) can hijack the router and take control of it. In fact, the router may come with wireless administration disabled, forcing you to connect directly just to enable it.
