How can you tell who is using your home wireless network?

I have a D-link wireless router with 10 digits password set on the network. I want to know if it is possible to see who is using the network at a given time.

  1. Yes, login to the router. There should be section that shows the IP addresses of connected computers. Although, if I remember correctly this only works when using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) which auto-assigns computers connecting to the network an IP address.
  2. Your could have a look at a program called kismet, it audits wireless networks and shows client computers.
  3. I'm not positive, but you may be able to view the connected wireless clients like you can on a Linksys router. Kismet is a good solution, but you'll have to read up on how to use it. http://www.kismetwireless.net/
  4. Open up a command prompt. (Start - Programs - Run - type "cmd" and click OK). At the command prompt, type "ipconfig". In the text that pops up, you will see "Default Gateway" and a corresponding address. Write that address down. Now, close the command prompt. Open up Internet Explorer. Type the address you just wrote down into the address bar of IE. Now, search the page of your wireless router's settings page to find something like "DHCP Client List." This will show you what computers are on your network.
