Home Wireless Network Home Wireless Network

VERY IMPORTANT! Wireless home network?

How do I set up a wirelss network in my home? I have a Belkin 54g wireless router as an access point and a U.S. Robotics MAXg network card in my computer. I ran the wireless network wizard and it wouldn't work. It said to plug my flash drive into the router which I have no idea how to do because there is no USB jack in the router. Then I tried doing it without the flash drive and it said I would have to enter numbers in to the router, which, I don't get how I would do that. Do I have to have a certain type of wireless router? Please if you can, run me through how to set this up. Thanks

  1. Enter the numbers IN TO the router? I don't think so. I think you need to enter the code no. that is somewhere on the router itself into the set up wizard. Try unplugging everything, and then starting over again. Unplug the phone/cable line and let it sit for a while, then start everything back up.
  2. Belkin use 192.168.2.1 as the setup by default. Let Windows manage wireless on your computer, scan for Belkin and select connect. Open Internet Explorer and type 192.168.2.1 in the address line (no http or www). The setup is real easy. Keep in mind that if you are using the wireless to connect to the internet, connect the router to your dsl modem (or whatever you use to connect). The USB jack on your router is normally a little square plug that uses a cable to connect to your computer.
  3. There should be instructions with the router or on the belkin website for that information. Basically, you have to access the router, which is done by going to your browser and typing in something similar to '192.168.1.1' and entering the password(most usually no username and admin as the password). from there, you have to make sure that you have the right channel setup(usually defaults to 6) and the right SSID. I don't know about belkin, but usually the SSID is similar to the brand name(such as how Linksys default is 'Linksys') You have to also set-up your wireless access card the same way, but usually through software provided. As for the USB, you probably don't have one. Windows tells you to that but most usually, there isn't one. That's why you do it manually.
  4. It depends on how your router is setup. If it has WEP enabled, you need to know the key to get a wireless connection. If you turn off WEP on both the router and the laptop, it may connect. My laptops with XP seem to connect just fine. READ the router manual. It tells you how to access it and set it up from your wired computer, once setup, your wireless may work.
