How to connect to the internet using a wireless card in a desktop??

I know it's easy to connect using a laptop, just pick a connection. I am using a desktop over at my Grandpa's house and I am trying to connect to the Internet, how do I set it up without calling the cable company?? I guess I am just trying to connect to someones internet without paying for it. This will only be for a week, while I move into a house. All I have is my wireless card. Hope I explain this well. Thanks for the help I cannot view any open connections.

  1. Just like your laptop, if you can see an open advertised connection, and select connect.
  2. Assuming the card is already installed.... 1) Is your wireless network connection enabled? How to check... Either 1) Start -> Right-click My Network Places -> Properties 2) Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections Make sure the wireless connection is enabled. If it has a red X through it, right-click and choose Enable. 2) Once you make sure it is enabled, right click on the wireless connection and click View Available Wireless Networks. If there are any wireless networks within range, they will show up. If none show up, then there aren't any within range of your wireless card.
  3. Someone who lives close to grandpa's house needs a router, so you can get a connection.
