Would a wireless desktop card work with a router of a different make?

i have just signed upto talk talk and have paid the extra £20 for the wireless router. now the problem is that my desktop isnt wireless. so i was wondering if i were to buy a wireless card for my desktop of say a "d-link" one, would that pose as a problem if say my router were to be of a different company? i.e. would/should they be compatible with one another?

  1. No problem whatsoever. Go ahead. WDW
  2. YES
  3. As long as they comply with the same standard(s) they will work together. I'm using a (built in) Compaq, a Linksys PCMCIA card and a Belkin PCI card with a Thompson router... with no problems as they are all wireless-G compliant.
  4. Yes Just ensure that both devices support the same wireless standard 11.b ,11.g of 11.n I have used linksys, belkin and hawkings with many brands of routers
  5. It should work if they use the same standard as others have noted. Some manufacturers claim that using the same brand of card and router will increase performance.
  6. If the router and the wireless adapter are the same standard, for example 802.11g and 802.11g they will always work with one another. If they are made by the same company they will typically work a bit faster with one another. For example my D-Link 802.11n wireless usb adapter gets connected at 300Mb/s whereas my Laptop's Artheros 5001 802.11g only gets connected at 48Mb/s to my D-Link DIR-655 802.11n Xtreme wireless router. There's also the factor of the g versus n in the example. But the laptop wireless connects to the D-Link wireless router just fine.
