How can I get someones IP address from an Email ? Or are there any other ways ?

I noticed on a few emails that my IP had been given to the person I emailed through a email viral scan program the person must use. Ive never seen this before. Is there any ways a person could get a address for another person and use it to attack the person in some way ? what about an actual physical address from the IP, how hard would it be to get a hold of one just from an IP ?

  1. Look at the email headers. It occasionally lists the originating IP Address, but this is becoming more rare. If you get their IP Address, you could attack them 'til your hearts content or until the feds come busting down your door. There are obviously better ways than leaving an audit trail straight to your service provider/yourself. I'm just saying that yes, it is possible to attack them. Getting the general geographic location is fairly easy, but also can be very wrong. It depends on where the IP Address is registered to as to where it appears when you look at it on something like Visual Route. However, with a little social engineering, it's fairly simple to get the actual end-user if you can determine the ISP that is serving that user. You could call them up and claim that you're having trouble on your connection or dig around and find some insider information about the company and then pose as a technician out on a trouble call to fix it. You could call dispatch and say something to the effect that the address on the ticket is wrong and that you need to find where the customer lives. Sometimes it could take doing both of these or some other avenue to find out the information you need. It's really limited by your creativity. It's well written by one of the most renown social engineers of our age. WG
