Does my IP address change as I go to different wifi spots and dial up spots?

I have a laptop, and I've heard your IP address changes. Does it change when you go to different wifi spots and use it? If you go to the same wifi spot, do you have the same IP address? I have dial up at home, so does your IP address change, too, as you use dial up? Please tell me in detail if you can.

  1. Yes the IP changes. It is called DHCP and most companies use dymnamic IP addressing. Which means every time you connect you get a new lease of an IP Address. However if you are looking at it from a security point of view. Your mac address never changes as it is tied to the hardware of your pc. More specfically the hardware address. oh I mean by security by the ability to trace iligal activity back to your computer
  2. Yes your IP changes when ever you change networks. Starbucks gives out a 192.168.15.XXX Panini's hands out a 192.168.0.XXXX Dial up hands out a 205.194.105.XXX These are made up examples, not real To check them when you are connected to them just start/run then type in cmd and hit OK a black screen(DOS) opens and you type in - ipconfig /all and hit enter You will see the actual IP addresses being issued. These are "Dynamic" and will change slightly each visit. Note they all have lease obtained and lease expires time/date. That way when you leave or overstayed your welcome some one else can get the IP address. This is called TCP/IP Internet protocal addressing and makes the world/internet go round. AAS Comp Networking
