IP Address?
This may sound a little silly, and it's probably common knowledge, but I really don't know the answer... What exactly is an IP Address? Does each computer have one? Or is it an internet thing. If I had two home computers, would each have a different one? Thanks. =] -Megan

- HI Megan, Ip-Internet Protocol And yes, all your home computer do have different ip addresses. If, they all have the same ip.Then your computers won't work on the internet. You probably need a router to assign addresses to different computers.
- an IP address can be thought of as an address house number or a telephone number so when you request a web page the server knows where to send it as for a home network the computer on that network all have to have different IP addresses but you don't have to worry about that as a windows service called DHCP handles the problem of organizing IP addresses
- IP address stands for Internet Protocol address. It currently is a set of 4 numbers that represent the network interface card you are using. The protocol can get pretty convoluted, but if you open a DOS command window on your PC and type ipconfig - you will see the IP address associated with your computer.
- IP address is and address that is assigned to computer that are networking. Your computer though if it has a network interface card has whats called a MAC address. this is your computers real address then IP is used to help other computers learn the path to that computer. Hope this help explain it a bit better and no its not common knowledge. your probably going to get alot of answers by people who think they know but don't really. if you want me to explain it better just send me an e-mail through here and i can or you can check wikipedia on IP and MAC addresses
- ip adress stands for internet protocol address and is like your postal adress. there are four parts. each the size of 1 bite which is 8 bits. that means the total ip adress is the size of 32bits. In arabic numerals each bit is assighned a value between 0 and 256. However the adresses 0.0.0.0 and 256.256.256.256 donot exist. In all there is about 1.2 billion ip adresses the ip adress is used by the internet to identify where information comes from and goes to. if your not hooked up to the internet you dont have one contrary to popular belief. with two different home computers hooked up to the internet you will have a different one for each one. As a side note anyone who knows ur ip can access your computer directly if you dont have firewall, spyware, and antivirus installed
