IP Address?

What exactly is it? I know the government and police etc. can track your ip address to find you or whatever else, but I read somewhere that your ip address in only temporary. Like, it changes every time you do a certain thing. Also, does your ip address contain everything you've done with your computer since you've gotten it? Or do the sites and downloads get deleted after 30 days of no use. Can you clear your ip address?

  1. IP stands for internet protocol its like ur computers address on the internet, and no it doesnt change unless u move from house or get a new computer, and u cant clear it either, if u want to know more specifics please feel free to email me at l-onofre@att.net
  2. In a simple way: As you have a home, school or work address that are totally unique, your PC and every machine on the Internet has a unique identifying number, called an IP Address. The IP address enable the communication between computers. So every time you visit a web site, send or receive an email, log in to your bank, or even share files with other PCs on your own home or business network, your computer is telling the other computer what its address is and how to find it in the Internet. How do you obtain your IP address? You don't have a way to assign your own IP address, so you "borrow" one from your ISP (Internet Service Provider, example AOL). Your ISP could "lend you" a different IP address every time that you log on the Internet or assign you a static (unchangeable) IP address; but it doesn't matter how your ISP assign to you your IP address, because this address is not a direct path to your PC, it's really the address of your ISP's server, and when the server receive a communication for your PC, the ISP's server takes over and directs the information to your PC. This allows the ISP to change your IP address every minute if it wants to while keeping a static IP address out there for the world to find you at. Your ISP follow the law that indicates the privacy and retention of the information related to the IP address they manage. To make it easy instead of using a IP address, you find a "name" asign to these address. Example: 69.147.114.210 is the IP address of www.yahoo.com. Type this http://69.147.114.210/ in your browser Read this about yahoo collection and use practices related to IP address: http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/ip/ You want to know your IP address use this web site: http://whatismyipaddress.com/ or http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation
