How to tell if I have a wireless network adapter installed.?
I have a secured wireless network setup in my home. My nephew lives across the street (about 200 feet) and wants to connect to my network. I have been unable to set his PC up. He has a Dell Dimension 4300 and a Belkin router attached. My thinking is he needs something to detect my wirelss signal. In network connections it shows a network with limited connectivity and can't repair the connection. How do I determine if he has a wireless network adapter in his PC? I see a sound card, an ethernet adapter and video adapter cards. Any ideas? His router is connected by ethernet cable to the PC, he doesn't have an ISP, he wants to wireless to my network.

- go to ur internet connections in control panel .. if there is a wireless adapter it will say wireless ..
- device manager should show you all network devices. (right click my computer, choose properties. the go to hardware, then click device manager. you'll see all devices. click the plus sign next to Network adapters.) if he does not have one, you can get a wireless USB adapter for his laptop. just make sure it supports the type of encryption you have in your network. what is his belkin router connected to? edit: the router is not doing anything then, if he has no ISP.
- i go with the first girl
- when you look at the back of his pc, do you see an antenae sticking up (to receive wireless signals)? if not, then no wireless card is installed......BTW....most wireless routers only broadcast up to about 150 feet reliably although you can find some that will go up to 300 ft...but those usually have MIMO which uses radio signals to broadcast the wireless
- That's a desktop. It does not come with a wireless adapter. You'll need to buy one. You can get either a PCI or USB -based adapter. The USB is much easier to install, you don't have to open the case. The PCI will actually have more range, though. Dells are very easy to open and add cards to.
- hit start menu hit control menu jst keep looking in stuff n c if its there, look in directions that came with computer, look for switches on computer that flip back n forth from satellite to other click on stuff in menu tray...bring his computer over and if has satellite, will walk u thru set up. like u set urs up then charge him
- click start, conrol panel, look for wireless network setup wizard icon.if no icon it is not wireless capable.
- if using windows XP/2k start -> run -> cmd c:>ipconfig /all if using *nix open shell # ifconfig this will display the name of all properly installed network adapters. and the IP addresses they are assigned to for weak signal (can't connect) you may need to check your wifi router for these possibilities: 1. encryption type (are you using WEP or WPA?) some old wifi adapters (from your nephew's PC) can only use WEP and WPA-personal. you might be using WPA-enterprise 2. is your nephews belkin router properly configured for your network? check to see if the belkin router is acting "as a bridge" or wifi access point 3. 200 feet could be stretching it too far (unless you have something like linksys GX routers), consider adding a "wifi repeater" somewhere in between the 2 points. good luck.
- You check it under Network adapter. How to check? Put your cursor on My Computer icon on your desktop screen. Right click , click on Properties. Click on Hardware tab, click on Device Manager button. There you go, see Network adapter. If you see a WLAN adapter under network adapter that means it has a wireless adapter on it. About that, limited or no connectivity. On your computer, go to Control Panel, Network Connections, then on Wireless Network Connections, right click on it. Click on Properties. Under General tab, uncheck the box that says. "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity". Then click on OK button. Right click again on wireless network connection. Click on view available wireless network, the computer should be able to detect any wireless network. Double click on it, then type in the network key. And thats it! Your nephew should be able to get on to the internet.
- device manager. U go there by clicking on Computer with right-click and selecting Properties.
