Home network setup: from one router (4lans) to more?

hi, please share with me your knowledge. I currently have a modem/router + wireless integrated in my home. I have four computers using the four Lans and at least four clients using the wireless connection. This setup is not optimal, for example : When many wireless clients are connected the Lans file transfer slow down heavily. This works the other way aroundm when transfering files locally the wireless clients' Internet access becomes very slow. In addition i need more than four Lans ports now. I think i need to separate some of the functions of my router. But i don't know a)what is optimal b)What is a recommended setup. For example i want to try to have 1)Adsl modem +an external router 8 ports (connected into it)+a wireless router (connected into the Lan router. Would that work ? I've always thought that two routers would not be able to manage IPs and that for example my wireless clients would not then be able to see the Lans shared drives anymore. Let me know your thoughts

  1. Unless your router is very old it should cope with this. Being wireless it is not likely to be old enough to suffer this problem. The problem is most likely that you do not have enough bandwidth. You will need to subscribe to a faster connection. To connect extra machines you need a network switch connected to one of the LAN ports of the router, all the other machines connect to the switch. Make sure all your machines are totally virus and spyware free. One infected machine can slow the whole network.
  2. Thoughts are don't waste your money. You have the best you can get with the situation you have. If you desire you can take a switch and connect it into the wired port of the router and expand it as much as wanted. May have to go into router as change the number of allocated IP addresses in the NAT. No hardware change will ncrease the overall speed of the systems. Anytime more than one, whether wired or wireless the incoming bandwidth is split. The only thing to look into is a Wireless G router with G interfaces. If you want to really invest, go with an N routing device and N pickups. They are capable of up to 100M thruput.
