Wireless card for laptop with windows 98. Can I get an updated card that will work with an old router?
I have an old wireless Dell Router model 1184 manufactured in January 2003, with the wireless card that I use in my laptop, using windows 98. I have found that my card does not pick up the signal in some hotels or other public places, where I see others are on the internet with not problem. I have been told there are newer routers that will not work with my card. Can I get a new card that will work with the newer routers and still use the card with my old router. Is programing involved to use the new card? If there is no problem to update, please tell me specifically what to buy.

- yes. You should be able to use I would recommend D-link wireless laptop pcmia card. then new version before the vista compatible ones. try here to get one -----> http://www.tigerdirect.com
- check the properties of the card you have; if it's 802.11b then it's old, but most wifi routers are backwards compatible...... the signal strength may be the problem for public WAPs; get as close as you can to the source; also these other users may be detecting a specific non-public (non 802.11x) provider service, like sprint or such. if you can get on any public 802.11x network, then its not a signal reception/transmission problem.
