how to setup a home network?

i have 1 desktop running win xp pro, 1 dell laptop with win vista, desktop has internet through cable modem. hooked up a wireless router and got the laptop online but dont know how to setup home network, want to share printer from my desktop. any help welcome

  1. I've attached one of my favorite tutorials from the Linksys site. Check it out, I think you'll find it useful regardless of the wireless router you have. Also included a link to a really good (more technical) site that will explain many nuances of the network. Here's what I'm thinking about your particular setup. 1. The wireless routed should be connected to the cable modem. Be sure to enable firewall and encryption on the router. 2. Desktop hard wired into the router (assuming you can run the cable). That's an Ethernet (Cat5) cable from the PC's ethernet port to one of the router's available ethernet ports (usually 4 or more). If you can't run the cable, get a wireless adapter 802.11g and connect that to your desktops usb port. 3. Sounds like you have the laptop wireless working already. Cool. You should be able to go into network setup wizard on the laptop to be able to see the printer connected to your desktop. Have fun and good luck!
