Home network setup? Wired PC, wireless laptop?

I have a netgear router which my PC is wired to. My daughter's PC in her room has a netgear wireless adapter and is connected to the router wirelessly. My partner's laptop is wireless and connects to the router wirelessly. All three connect to the internet with no problems whatsoever. How do I go about making it so that we can share files, and possibly the printer attached to my PC?

  1. The first thing to do is to make sure that all the computers are in the same Workgroup. If you right click on my computer and then click on properties and then select the computer name tab and change the workgroup so that they are all the same. Then you need to enable file and print sharing on each computer by going to the control panel and using the "Network and Internet Connections" panel and then the network setup wizard. (This is for Windows XP) This should enable you to share files and the printer
  2. You need to turn on file sharing on each PC... then share whatever piece of your disk you want others to see. Then on each other's PCs... connect the network drives that the other two offer. And on your PC you want to turn on printer sharing then share the printer with a share name. On the other two PCs add a network printer at <your computer>//<share name>. Add drivers as appropriate. Oh, you'll probably want to configure your router to always allocate the same IP addresses if you use the IP addresses for sharing. If you use 'workgroup' and 'computer name' for sharing then you can let the router allocate IP addresses as it wants. MOST IMPORTANTLY you should ensure that youve got firewalls in place to isolate the shares from the outside world. Either set up the firewall on your router to block everything other than http, https, ftp and any other protocols you need... or set up firewalls on each PC... or set up both router and PC firewalls. Otherwise you're probably sharing everything with the internet.
  3. on each computer, go to the file you wish to share, right click on it and under the sharing tab, check the box next to "share this folder on the network". click apply and ok. you will need to do this for every file on every computer you want to share. to make the printer available, you need to go to control panel, printer and fax folder on your computer. right click on the printer and select properties. select the share tab and check the box to share on the network. install the printer program and driver on all the computers, and with your computer up and running, everyone else should be able to print from it. This will only work with your computer on.
  4. Its automatically possible to share files across the network you've set up, however you'll have to allow file sharing on those that you wish. Say, for example, you have a folder called c:/music that has all your MP3s in, and you want to share that and all sub directories available to all computers. Navigate to the c:/ directory, and right click the music folder. under the sharing tab, enable file sharing. You can also decide whether to allow all users to change files (which means they have full access to the directories, including deleting and adding files). Once this is done they'll find the directory listed as something like "music on dad's PC" in the network places.
