- first off, you need a wireless router. the wireless card in your laptop has to talk to something. good luck!
- There are quite a few considerations before you can set up your wireless network. First, hopefully you are using some type of security on your wireless router. If not, you are exposing all computers on your network to outside users. Second, did you set up the wireless router? You should be able to run an ethernet cable between the router and your PC to get it set up correctly. There should be an ID and password provided with the router. Third, did you hook up the Cable/DSL modem to the router correctly? If you get the wireless network running, you still may not have internet connectivity. Fourth, does your laptop have wireless built in? You will have to make sure your Laptop has a wireless adapter card that is compatible with the wireless router. Some of the newer routers on the 801.N standard won't work with older wireless adapter cards. Fifth, does your laptop see any wireless networks in range after you have all of the pieces in place? If not, something is not working. If you can see your router in the list, then you can provide the security information and connect to the network and hopefully the internet as well. But before anyone will really be able to help you, you need to state how far into the process you are so far and what you have working.
- The first thing that is needed to know is if you are using a wireless router or a direct connect ( Cat 5 between computers) connection. If it is wireless then you need to make certain your Laptop has a compatable wireless network card. The next thing to check would be to make sure your desktop and the router do not have the same IP address. The routers I think are usually preset at 192.168.0.1. You can go to Start > Run and type CMD. Then type IPCONFIG and see what IP Address it returns. If those numbers match then the desktop ip will need to be changed to a different static IP or made dynamic. Good luck!
- Fist things first. A wireless router is the first part of any wireless network. A router acts a hub and sends your internet signal to all the PC's in range. When you first buy your router you need to plug it into your computer to configure. It's important to add a password to your network. A skilled hacker can gain access to an unprotected computer in about 30-45 seconds. Also change the SSID of your router. The SSID is the name of your network. If you don't the name of your network will be that of the company that made your router. This can be a security issue because some routers have factory default passwords in case you forget yours. If a hacker knows these passwords he might be able to bypass your password. Once you have it configured you no longer need it connected to your PC, however "wired" connections are faster then wireless. So if your router will be near your PC you might as well leave it pluged in. When you try and connect your laptop, use control panel and select the wireless network options page (your might have an icon in your system tray for your wireless network as well). Then view wireless networks and select the SSID of the network you just setup. It will ask for your password. Once you connect the first time it should connect automatically next time you turn your laptop on.
