Specifics for wireless card for a desktop PC?
I'm going to be moving one of my desktop PCs out of my office, so I won't be able to reach it with an Ethernet cable. I think my best option is going to be to put a wireless modem in it. As far as I know it doesn't have one already. Anyhow, I'm looking at my best option for this. I use a Linksys router and my laptop works really well. The router itself is an accelerated router, so I guess a faster one would work. Is it possible to get one that will just plug into the tower rather than having to install it. I know like on an old laptop you can just put it in the PC card slot, I didn't know if this was possible for a desktop as well. Thank you!

- You can buy a USB wireless adapter if you have an available USB port. It won't work as well as a card, but it should get you by.
- You will need to take the cover off the unplugged PC and insert a card, typically a PCI type card. I use a Linksys wireless router so I got the same brand PCI wireless card for the tower PC. Works fine. Easy install too. You can go USB....but I have heard a lot of poor performance stories about those. Go with the card inside the PC IMO>>>
- It all depends on how far the distance is and how many walls you are shooting through. If you are going through more than two walls and more than 30 feet I would go with a card. Otherwise you should be able to sneak through with a usb device. You can always buy a usb device and then return it if it does not work. I know for a fact that CompUSA stores feature a 15 day return policy they will accept opened products. For someone who is not comfortable with opening their case, I would definitely recommend the usb route first, then escalating it to the Pci card route if that does not work.
- You most certainly can. I have a Linksys Wireless g router and simply got a Linksys wireless PCI card and inserted it into an empty card slot. It can be tricky setting up a wireless network as you want to make sure that you secure your wireless network which could be difficult for you if you do not know all that this entails.
