ip address...........?

hi all!!!!! Each & evry computer connected to the internet has an IP address & that too an unique one... Well i think there are more than 999,999,999,999 computers connected to the internet.. The format of the ip add goes like this... xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx How can this allot an unique ip add for computers which are more in number greater than 999,999,999,999 ??? How does an IP address uniquely identify a computer???

  1. first off, it tops off at 255.255.255.255 and some of these addresses can not be used from that. So it is even less. Yes there are not enough. That is why we are moving from IP version 4 to 6. But in the mean time we are using NAT and PAT to get around this. Just google network address translation and port address translation for more on that. Anyways, its just like an address. Its structured. It is a lot like a mailing address. There is only one to each host on the public internet.
  2. Soon they're will be changing to IPv6 instead on the current IPv4 which will support more than 4 billion permutations.
