IP address?
I was playing Yahoo pool with this idiot a while ago. He was bragging about how good he was and telling me how much I sucked. It was obvious he had no life. Anyway, I IMed him and he said something about "you can do a lot with someone's ip address. thanks for IMing me because now i have it." It was meant as a threat. He was probably just some lame teenager who spends all his time on the computer but I'm kinda worried. Can you get someone's IP address just buy IMing them on yahoo? If you do have someone's IP address, can you really do harmful things with it?

- He fooled you. Dont get paranoid. When you chat with some one on YAHOO the Yahoo's server acts as a mediator. SO even if he tries to find your IP he can only trace you till Yahoo's server and he will get YAHOO server's IP. Cuz YAHOO wont reveal YOUR IP to him. But if you do a file transfer like if you share a document or MP3 hen while the file is shared its possible to get an IP of another person. Do you use DIAL Up . If yes disconnect and connect again , you will get a new IP address. If you have a permanent IP (static) like if you have cable or DSL then other person can misuse your IP. 2ND static IP is not provided by all companies. Check with your Internet service provider for more info if you have a DYNAMIC IP or STATIC IP. Hope that answers your question.

Every time an internet user try to see a website his Ip address will sent to the server and the reply (let it be website loading) will sent to that Ip address. Also when you are sending an E mail your Ip address is sent to the mail receiver. And an Ip address is not something like a password and no one can do anything with an IP address. By using an IP address one can locate the computer,andthe ISP and other such details.It do not affect ones security. One harmful thing one can do by IP address is to send trojan like back orifice and netbus to the targetted computer by giving the IP address. If you have a powerfull antivirus and also have a firewall program this is not possible. IP address is used by cyber crime investigators to locate the hacker! and if u are not a hacker and nothing illegal with you need not be afraid.....be cool........!
