HELP! My brand new MacBook Pro is wreaking havoc on my home wireless network! How do I make it stop?

I was very pleased to recently get a new MacBook Pro... But ever since brought the damn thing home, it can barely stay online for more than a few minutes (...that is, when it is successful in connecting AT ALL), and if that's not enough, it knocks all the other machines in the house OFF the network, causing me to have to reboot the router far more than I should ever have to. Everything was fine before the arrival of the MacBook. My wireless router is a LinkSys WRT54G V5 Wireless G Router. I have updated the Firmware on the router a few times, but not since the arrival of the MacBook (perhaps I should check for an update?). I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on this.

  1. That's not normal. I have a Mac connected wirelessly to a wrt54g v6 router with no problems. Try this and if it doesn't work bring back the Mac for a replacement. http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2005093011343164
  2. you can try giving the Mac a static ip address that conforms to the addresses assigned by the router, preferably above the addresses normally handed out by the router. (if the last octet normally handed out by the router starts at 100 and the router hands out addresses up to 199 but you only use 101-104, give the Macbook 150.) This will prevent the Macbook from conflicting with the other computers on the network. If the Mac's signal is dropping and reconnecting, that would account for bumping the other computers, but this will work around that.
