wireless router?

why does most wireless router have connection speed of up to 11 Mpbs or 54 Mpbs only? i am on a monthly plan of speed 100 Mpbs and i own only one laptop.. dose it mean that i will be wasting my money if i get a wireless router? as in that i will be paying more money every month to the internet service provider for the high speed of 100Mpbs but i can only use up to 54Mpbs...????????? by the way.., how much can i get a linksys wireless router in singapore??

  1. 100kbps is your speed. You don't have a 100Mbps pipe, that is huge, HUGE. Just get a linksys or netgear 30 bucks in singapore. Most computer especially laptops can really handle a anything more then about 12 to 20 MB per seconds anyway.
  2. Your ISP is lying to you. Period. End of story. Unless you are living in a cable internet provider's network room there is no way in hell you are getting 100Mb per sec. the max you can get at a house is 30Mb per sec.
  3. When you use wireless connection, the Speed is lower than if you use wired. So I have my laptop connected via wireless and wired for a total speed of... 154kbps!!!! And I only have DSL. lol. For the pricing, try http://www.linksys.com, or maybe .se or something for singapore. The only way to get full speed is to do what I did. Good Luck.
  4. Most wireless routers operate at the following speeds: 11MB (B) or 54MB (G) for a wireless connection. If you use one of the wired ports on the router, you get 100MB. All of these rates are in bits, not bytes (divide by 8 to get bytes). 54MB is plenty adequate for your laptop. There are faster routers that run at 108MB wireless and above. The new wireless N standard runs much faster as well. Remember that many web sites don't transmit that fast to you anyway, so unless you are downloading something, your browsing will be fine.
