Please help me with my wireless network at home?
Hi. I have a notebook computer with a dlink 56mb/s "g" compatible wireless card. It works great at libraries, ect where they have wifi. I'm trying to set up a home wireless network but am getting a bit stuck. Computer attached to my cable modem runs windows xp home edition. The router is a lynksys 56mb/s "g" router. I have it hooked up to the main computer, and have no problem getting to the net with the main computer, so the router is hooked up and working properly. Now, with my laptop, it seems to be connecting to my "homenetwork", but when I hit internet explorer, I get an error message "can not find server". Is there something else I need to do? My notebook runs windows 2000.

- i think you should take out the main wire for router, and ur modem for 10seconds.. plug them back in and try it again.. if it doesn't works Try disabling the antivirus too ( specially Firewall) restart and check.. i think it will work
- so your notebook finds the connection, but you can't get onto the internet? Sounds like either a firewall issue, or you have secured the connection... its not a hardware issue
- First of all, it should go Cable Modem >> Router >> Computers, it sounds like you have Cable Modem >> Main Computer >> Router, which won't work with wireless networking. Plug WAN on router into LAN on cable modem, and then connect the main computer to the router. All devices should be turned off while doing this, so that the router has a fresh start (there is a technical reason.. would take a while to explain) Once that's done, try connecting again, and try accessing the internet. If that still doesn't work, try opening Network Connections from the control panel, right click on your wireless network connection and click properties. In the list, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click properties. This is where it could get tricky, depending on the model of your router. First of all, check "Use the following IP address:" and enter in the following order: 192.168.1.51 (generally, replace 51 with 1-100) 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1 Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.1.1 ...again, this only works with some routers. You may also try running the network configuration wizard (if 2000 has one).
- Its usually better to run the same manufacturer. Your notebook card is DLink while your Linksys Router.I'm not sayin that is the problem, but itmay have its affects.
