Does WiFi the same thing as my home wireless network switch thing?

I know there are free public WiFi hotspots in like cities and stuff, but im wondering if it is the same as my home Wireless network? Basically, can a Pocket PC that has WiFi connect to my wireless network, so i can go online? On new egg.com, im looking at pocket Pc's and i see they either have WiFi, or WirelessLAN. If one has WiFI but not wireless LAN then they can't connect to a wireless network? Thanks
