- Since you have wireless routing the machines are nearly set up. Right click each my computer (computer on Vista). Select properties and then computer name. Set each machine to a simple name, set them all to the same workgroup name. They will need to reboot. On each machine decide if you want to share folders or printers. Right click such folders or printers and set sharing. Set the exception for file and printer sharing on each firewall. It can take 20 minutes, but you should see any machine offering services in the network folder. The only limitation might be on Vista. Go to the tcp/ip properties and click advanced. Then select the wins tab and turn on always use netbios over tcp/ip. Turn off use lmhosts. The machine will argue about an empty wins address. Override this. Then even the Vista machines an browse! Vista = virtual insanity setup to annoy. Netbios is essential to browsing on small networks, MS turn it off if it sees a dhcp service like a router.
- you need a wireless router. Linksys are my personal favorite ones. Connect the router to your wireless internet modem. You will need a wireless network card on your desktop, same thing for your laptop unless it already comes with one. You configure your router with an SSID and a wireless key. You then use the same settings on both computers and thats all you need. the router will share internet and netowoek resources. This routers are pretty easy to configure. please email at marcodurazoolivas@yahoo.com if you need more help. Thanks.
- Yea Guys but just remember that its like having a radio ME station at home don't forget to add extra encryption hardware and/or updates.
- You already have a wireless home network. All that remains is to set access from the laptop to the desktop and that is done with Network shares such as file and printing sharing. You can find out how by going to help and support from the start menu and select Networking and the web.
- Well if you already have the router setup and if you can browse than you already have lot's of it done. Now when it comes to setup the networking (LAN) thats also easy. You need to make either of your Hardware (laptop, desktop) as a main file host. You can go to the properties of your local drive and allow the drive to be shared. after you have done that you can find the hos tname of the system you are on. For example if u want the pc to be access using the laptop you can go to the command window in the pc and find the host name or the ip address. If you choose to use ip address make sure they are hard coded in the nic cause router will renew the ip's since you prob will have DHCP server on. Ok now after you acquired the address you need to come to your laptop and go to my computer than click on tools and than click on map network drive. Now here you have to put down the path as \\your desktop\folder you wan to share. (\\10.10.1.1\c_drive) after that it will automatically connect to the desktop make sure to put a check on re-connect at log on so it will do it automatically every time u boot your laptop. Now the main thing to focus is u have to setup the share on each allocated drive on the PC. Also if you have firewall running make sure to put the IP's from laptop to put in allowed zone in the desktop firewall settings. Well good luck it should work now.
