How do you set up a wireless home network and share computers between the parents but not the children?
This seems like it would be something lots of people would need --- set up a wireless home network and share things on computers with Mon & Dad but not with the children --- but I can't find anything on this. I think I even got my system to do it once but I forgot how. Anbody know how to do this?

- well if you have cable internet (not dial up) then you can buy a wireless adapter and follow directions that come with the adapter. You could probably get one from wal-mart or any computer store.
- This will be a very nice set up. What I would do is that I would use one Laptop/PC as the DHCP/DNS server. The DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) allows you to give IP addresses to computers in the network dynamically. DNS server allows name conversions from IP to NAME and vice versa. So once you set up DHCP/DNS server (using Windows 2003 Server preferrably) on one of the PCs, you can connect one router to that computer. The router will allow other computres to be connected to that computer. Once that is done you will be able to connected all computers with others. That takes about hundreds of hours to describe here so I think your best bet is to read a lot about this subject in the Internet and preferably in CISCO's website. P.S: This is my 100th post :P Good luck.
- You need to enable file and print sharing in Windows for network sharing. To enable 'File and Printer Sharing' in Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) 1. Open Windows Firewall 2. Click the Exceptions tab 3. Select 'File and Printer Sharing' 4. Click 'OK' to confirm. See this link for networking basics http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/default.mspx For the children, I suggest that you just do not allow file and print sharing on their machine and use something like netnanny for safer online browsing.
- enable file and print sharing on the computer you want to share, then right click the folder and setup permissions. Additionally, your children should each have their own "LIMITED" user account (not administrator) on their machine, then you can DENY access to any local OR remote folders based on that. here's a quick example: right click the folder you want to share hit properties click the sharing tab click theradio button to enable sharing give it a name click the permissions tab add your account to the list, give it full access remove the "everyone" account add your other parent's accounts if you want. additionally: you could right click 'my computer' goto manage go to manage users/groups add a group called parents add a group called children add the parents to the parents group add the children to the children group manipulate security using the groups instead of individual accounts (easier if you have a lot of kids) you might check out this site: http://parents.berkeley.edu/advice/teens/computer.html seems like a lot of good advice on there and less 'technical' than i would be.
- Go with jhered's answer. Other info given will just confuse the issue. If you have a wireless router it will configure all the tcp/ip settings for you. Individual passwords take care of the security.
