what hardware would I need to set up a home wireless network?
I have a HP Pavilion pc with a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 PCI adapter installed. I am on Verizon broadband using a Westell 6100 modum. I have purchased but not installed a Linksys Wireless Router G with speedbooster. I have a Compaq Laptop Presario M2000 that has a Realtek RT8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC. I want to set up the wireless netword in my home - the PC would be wired and the notebook wireless. The distance between them is a little less than 50 feet. What additional hardware would I need for the notebook? Thanks for any help!!

- Only other thing you would need is a wireless adapter for the notebook. These can commonlly be purchased as USB devices now so can be interchanged and used on various machines. Hope this helps
- All you need is a wireless adapter for your laptop. Since the PC is going to be wired to the router, you need either a pcmcia wireless adapter or a usb wireless adapter for the laptop. The pcmcia one will probably be better since it won't stick out as far as the usb one. Once you do that you have to follow the directions on the router and configure it properly and you are all set. The router needs to be set for PPPoE and you need your verizon username and password.
- You will just need a wireless PCMCIA card for your laptop. Basically you install the wireless router so that it is connected to your broadband, and there should be at least one cat5 socket to connect it to your PC. During the setup you'll be able to define all the WEP keys and so on. You'll need these to connect your laptop. Once you're running the PC via the router, you'll need to run the software for the wireless card on the laptop. It should then pick up your new wireless network. One tip... make sure you buy the same brand card for the laptop as you did for the router. If you do, the setup programs will be identical which makes it easier first time. Also, linksys products should be able to communicate better with linksys products :) I set a linksys wireless G one up recently at home for my PSP and for a laptop. It took a few minutes but the setup programmes were fairly straightforward, so you shouldn't have a problem.
- Whatever you do get the same brand for everything. Everytime I've tried to mix a wireless with a hardwired card on the same network its nothing but a pain in the rear. Usually one works but the other one doesn't and vis versa. I would suggest going completely wireless just to avoid the hassle. It may be worth the extra 50 bucks.
