Home Wireless Network Home Wireless Network

Can anyone give me detailed instructions for setting up a wireless network at home?

I have a tower and a laptop that have Wireless-G USB adapters connected to the internet via a router connected to the main computer in the house. Can I set up a network between my two wireless adapters without a router of my own? Is so, please give detailed instructions. I'm very computer savvy but networking is just something I've never gotten into. Thanks.

  1. I belive you can sir...In wireless networking you have two modes, infrastructure (central access points), and ad-hoc (peer to peer). Normally wireless networks are infrastructure mode which requires an access point such as a wireless router, but with ad-hoc mode, the wireless adapter would talk directly to each other. You have to configure the wireless adapters to work in ad-hoc mode, and they must have the same SSID and channel number. I believe in order to connect to the internet you must have a special type of gateway device. Keep in mind that the maximum speed of the connection is the B-standard 11gbs. Anyways, here is a link that I will help you out with the software side of things. Hardware wise you need a wireless-B adapter or better in your laptop/desktop. You'll also need some sort of DSL or cable modem (gateway). http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bowman_02april08.mspx Good luck, however, If at all possible, I highly recommend just purchasing a wireless router for performance/security reasons.
