Help. I have a home wireless network set up and its slow.?
I just upgraded my ATT / SBC Yahoo DSL to a faster line and its slower. I have a Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHZ router (WRT54G) and a Siemans router 4100. When I connect directly to the modem its faster but slows down when I go wireless to the router. I've been on the phone for hrs with ATT and Linksys and still can't figure this out. I have a desktop and a laptop connected to the wireless network and I have a security WEP set up so no one else is cluttering the line. Can it be that I need a new router? or WHAT ELSE CAN IT BE, I NEED SUGGESTIONS. This is driving me crazy. THANKS SO MUCH!!!! I'm sorry, yes the Siemans is a Modem. Its slower than 54mbs when I went to speed test it was 6.3 kbbs, it takes literally minutes to load. Yes, I have a WEP. Wireless connection says EXCELLENT. I have had this connection for over a year then only recent difference is that I changed with ATT to a faster speed connection. Wireless is in same room. I already tried turning everything on and off several times. I even reset my router and went through the who setting again this time to 11 not 6. Both the desktop and the laptop are slow unless I connect one of them directly to the modem then its gets moving quickerr.

- Wireless will be slower than a direct connection. The best you can hope for is 54 Mbps which is about half the speed of a direct connection (100 baseT) If your signal strength is less than excellent the speed goes down even further.
- Huh? You have two routers? Which one is the modem the siemens one? Have you checked all your phone lines to see if filters were installed? Have you tried resetting the modem and router by turning it off and turning it back on?
- Most of the time this is due to 3 possible causes: 1st) your router or wireless card only supports speeds of up to 11MBPS (Mega Bits Per second) 2nd) your wireless frequency is receiving interference from other wireless device (example a wireless phone or a neighbor's wireless network) default frequency is 6 you can change it to any thing from 1 to 11 3rd) your wireless network is not using any security (such as WEP or PSK) and home one else is downloading therefore using most of your bandwidth (your "wireless power") recommend to use security I had a client whos neighbor was viewing ilegal porn trough his internet and he got blamed for it.. tock 3mo for every thing to be clear and my friend to get out of jail.
- U DIDN'T SAY HOW MUCH SLOWER BUT WIRELESS IS SLOWER THAN DIRECT CABLE.THERE SHOULD BE INFORMATION WITH WIRELESS ON HOW FAST IT WORKS.SO YOU CAN GO TO A WEB SITE AND CHECK OUT THE SPEED YOU MUST HAVE A WIRELESS ROUTER AS I NEVER SEEN A WIRELESS MODEM.UN PLUG YOUR TELEPHONE FROM COMPUTER AND SEE IF IT MAKES A DIFFERANCE.THEN GO TO TOOLS INTERNET OPTIONS CONNECTIONS AT BOTTOM GO TO LAN SETTINS AND SET TO AUTO THEN DELETE THE SERVER LISTED IN BOX ABOVE
- You did not mention how far away you are from the router when accessing the net. The laptop will have a Linksys icon somewhere on it, probably the task bar at the bottom. If you have the router working, and you are connected...hover your mouse over that Linksys icon and see what the pop up says...excellent?...poor?...some percentage?... I have friends that can get excellent signal strength when in the same room with the router, but it all goes to h*** a hand basket when one or two rooms away. May be your probem....very Dependant on signal strength between the laptop and the router. Also, what wireless speed is the laptop running at?.. I note that the router is a G series, but unless the laptop is also a G series (not an older b series) , it will be very slow
