Setting Up Home Wireless Network Knowledge Base

Manually setting up a wireless network for Windows Home XP? This is unusual. My laptop connects perfectly to my wireless network at the office, using a D-Link. I am trying to set up a wireless network at home, and have tried 2 routers - a Trennet and a Linksys. Each says I have connected to the internet with a "good" connection, but nothing comes across on the screen. When I connect the DSL modem directly to the computer, it works perfectly. It pings on direct modem connect, does not ping on wireless connect. Something is interfering somewhere on my try to set up a home network Any ideas? Can I set yo the modem (192.168.1.1) manually?

Setting up a wireless home network help? I want to set up a small home network with 3 desktop PC's so that all 3 can access the internet and nobody punches anyone else for computer time. All I care about is access to the internet at good speeds for all 3 comps. PC 1 is brand new and pretty darn sweet - Vista Home Premium PC 2 is a 3 year old Dell Dimension 3000 - XP PC 3 is some kind of 5 year old EMachines - XP Everything I know about networking I've discovered in the last 2 days researching online but I don't know if I'm missing something. I'm getting a Linksys WRT54GS router and two Linksys WUSB54G USB adaptors. Is it as easy as plugging in the two adaptors in PC 2 and 3 while attaching the router to PC 1 and going through the various install and prompts? Is there something else that I'm going to need to buy to hook everything up or just the router and adaptors? Will older computers work with this? Is it ok with one of the comps running Vista with the other two running XP? Any help is greatly appreciated. You guys are great! Thanks a ton.

Problems setting up wireless home network with Vista and Linksys? We have recently purchased a new laptop with Vista to replace an old pc. As several family members have laptops (also vista) we decided to set up a wireless network using a Linksys wireless G router. I connected the ethernet wires as instructed and had to set up the router manually as a PPPoE. This appeared fine the internet worked through the hardline but when I went to log on wirelessly there was no network detected. I then used the CD set up disk to change the settings and the network appeared but it is not possible to connect to the internet. the network is a stand alone network for file sharing. The laptop hard wired into the router has internet but it says that this is on another network. After mapping the networks the modem is not connecting the wireless network to the internet. I have tried resetting things several times and am stuck. Help would be appreciated

How do I set up a wireless home network with a desktop, laptop and printers with a wireless firewall router? We have a laptop and desktop- both used for business and personal use. We would like to have a wireless home network, with our printer, so the desktop and the laptop can connect to the same thing, with our printer. We were thinking something along the lines of two user profiles- one business and one personal- and both computers can connect to each of these profiles, and the files can be sort of 'synchronised' whenever the laptop is in range- incase it has been taken away from home for business use. We have a wireless firewall router. One of the two printers is wireless (bluetooth) and the laptop is bluetooth, if that makes any difference. The only problem is we have no real idea how to do this! Is this possible? Mail me with step by step instructions if the answer thing is not sufficient. Any thing would be a great help!
Setting up Iphone onto my home wireless network? My Iphone will not accept the password that I use on my netgear router to let me join the wirless network in my house. When I am prompted for the password on the iphone, surely it's the same password that I use to log-in to the router? Please help
How to set up Home network with wireless desktop? Hello, I need help? I set up a home network as follows: 1)The cable wire located in my bedroom is connected "from" the wall "to" my motorola cable modem. 2) One end of an ethernet cable is connected "from" the cable modem, and the other end of the same ethernet connected "to" a d-link wireless router . 3) One end of 2nd ethernet cable is connected "from" the wireless router "to" the ethernet "slot" of my Desktop PC. Now I want to use my desktop, but not in my bebroom since I think it must stay there always wired right? Does a PC has to be wired somewhere at the central wireless network location for the network to function properly? oR can the router does it alone? My question is that someone told me that I can just leave the wireless router in my BRoom and simple move the desktop to maybe near the kitchen and use a "USB desktop wireless" card to use the Desktop wirelessly..is that possible? If it's possible, what's a good USB desktop wireless card? Thanks Also, the reason that I had set up my network central location in my bedroom is that the bedroom has the best Internet reception. The connection is more reliable there since it's the closest to the cable telephone pole. The cable guy installed cable wires from the cable telephone pole to all around my house with a lot of cable splitters, which maybe the problem. So, the cable reception is very weak in the all other rooms causing the Internet connection to drop very frequenty driving me crazy. Does anyone know if cable splitters cause their internet connection to drop or cause weak internet connections because of distance between the pole or cable splitters? I don't want to keep calling the cable company to fix this. Is there a quick do it your self solution for me such as re-running the cable wires, buying better cable splitters in order to avoid getting constantly disconnected? Thanks in advance To respond to the 1st answer..I already have a wireless router

Can you help me set up a home network wireless router to access files across computers: XP, 2000, 98 & Macs? I want to be able to share & retrieve various files across all platforms in the house (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Mac OS X (10.4) & OS 9.2). Can it be done? Can it be done securely? Only laptop at present is wireless, but I have PC cards for others if needed to make this work (otherwise, I assume they should remain wired connections to help secure the network-am I right?). Thanks in advance for any help with this since I'm not sure where to start.
Help. I have a home wireless network set up and its slow.? I just upgraded my ATT / SBC Yahoo DSL to a faster line and its slower. I have a Linksys Wireless G 2.4 GHZ router (WRT54G) and a Siemans router 4100. When I connect directly to the modem its faster but slows down when I go wireless to the router. I've been on the phone for hrs with ATT and Linksys and still can't figure this out. I have a desktop and a laptop connected to the wireless network and I have a security WEP set up so no one else is cluttering the line. Can it be that I need a new router? or WHAT ELSE CAN IT BE, I NEED SUGGESTIONS. This is driving me crazy. THANKS SO MUCH!!!! I'm sorry, yes the Siemans is a Modem. Its slower than 54mbs when I went to speed test it was 6.3 kbbs, it takes literally minutes to load. Yes, I have a WEP. Wireless connection says EXCELLENT. I have had this connection for over a year then only recent difference is that I changed with ATT to a faster speed connection. Wireless is in same room. I already tried turning everything on and off several times. I even reset my router and went through the who setting again this time to 11 not 6. Both the desktop and the laptop are slow unless I connect one of them directly to the modem then its gets moving quickerr.

Do I need to set-up my in home wireless network through my existing PC? I just bought a new laptop and linksys wireless router from Best Buy today. My parents, for whatever reason, do not want our desktop to be connected to the wireless network and the set-up disk only explains how to instal the network using your desktop in the network. I don't know much about computers, hopefully this is easy to do? any help would be greatly appreciated.
How to set new laptop so it will pick up my home wireless network connection? We have a wired/wireless network already set up here in our home, with a laptop wireless connected to it, and two wired desktops connected as well. This network was set up by the guys at Circuit City. I bought a used laptop with XP and it has a wireless network card. When I plug it into the network via the Ethernet cable (wired)... the internet works, and we can share files, etc. But when I try to pick up the wireless signal, it won't work. What might I have forgotten to do? Should I be using the drivers that go with the network card....? Or... do I have to reset the connection so that it uses the wireless router's driver? It seems to me that with a WiFi card, it should pick up any wireless network in the area, so why won't it pick up the one here in our home?
Can anyone give me detailed instructions for setting up a wireless network at home? I have a tower and a laptop that have Wireless-G USB adapters connected to the internet via a router connected to the main computer in the house. Can I set up a network between my two wireless adapters without a router of my own? Is so, please give detailed instructions. I'm very computer savvy but networking is just something I've never gotten into. Thanks. Here's the setup. There are currently 5 computers in the house. The main one (and the router through which we all get internet) is located in another part of the house. Two other roomates are connected to that router and I have two computers connected as well. I don't know what kind of router it is...whatever Verizon installed. Leaving all the other computers and the router downstairs out of the picture, can I just network my two computers together using my wireless-G adapters?
I need help setting up 2 home wireless networks, both G and N, with multiple ethernet access points.? I want 2 home wireless networks--G for kids and N for me. I have 9 devices needing ethernet access points--Tivo, PS3, Vonage, etc. Will the following work? I connect a basic switch to my cable modem, attach a G-wireless router to one of the switch's ports and N-wireless router to another. With the wired ethernet access points on the switch and two routers, I should have enough to connect all of my devices. My kids will only be set up to use the G network and share files on it. My computer will be set up with access to the G and N networks and able to access files/fully monitor both. Would this work? Is there something better? Could you attach the N to the cable modem and then the G and a switch to the N ports? Or could I just use an N and larger switch, and limit the kids access to my computer/files through software/network setup? I need to buy a switch and N router--any recommendations on good ones from a local CC, BB, etc? Thanks for any help you can provide! If two routers is too complicated, I can just have an N router connected to my cable modem. The problem is I don't have enough wired ethernet access points on the N router. Can I plug a switch into one of the router's ports to gain more access points? And any recommendations on the best N router and switch I could buy at a local large electronics store?

The OS is Vista. The computer upstairs has a little cheap USB network adapter that I bought for about $14.00 and I'm running Windows XP on it. I can connect to the internet on both but I can't share files and folders between these two computers. Help setting up my home network.? I have a desktop compaq that is hooked directly to a Netgear wgt624 router that is hooked up to a modem. I have 3 laptops ( one gateway, 2 toshibas). All are windows xp home except one toshiba is windows vista. All the computers can connect to the wpa protected wireless router. I am trying to set up a network with these 4 comps to share files and a printer. I have tried running through both home network wizard and wireless network wizard with no success.
