what do i need in order to setup a home wireless network? i am trying to set up a wireless network at home for me and my brothers and sisters so that when we are in our rooms on our laptops we can still message each other, help each other with homework, and send music and video to each other. This is NOT for internet. mom doesn't let us have it b/c she says it will side track our studies. but every solution for wireless home networks that i have seen concerns an internet connection. it needs to work in a pretty big house on three floors so i don't think just creating an ad hoc network between laptops would be suitable. is all we need a powerful wireless router? can it be used to just communicate between laptops? thanks for any info!!
Can I play Quake I across my home wireless network ? What I would like to do is the play Quake I across my home network which consists of 2 desktops using Wireless USBs and 4 Laptops (built in wireless). Thanks in advance!
Is it better to have a wired or wireless home network? I will be restoring am 1970 era home which includes pulling off all the old wood paneling, therefore I will have the ability to easily run cable through-out the house. Is it worth the trouble and expense or should I just stick with a wireless network?
Does a Home Wireless Network pose a health risk in the long term? I have a wireless network at home with my room housing the access point. Considering that its left on most of the time (if not 24/7), and i'm a bit of a worrywart, is there a health risk involved? Physics is not my strong point so I'm not really sure how radio waves interact with the human body. Isn't the op. frequency of 2.4GHz similar to that of a Microwave Oven?
how do i set up my home wireless network? I have a desktop pc which i know doesnt have a wireless network adapter, I have a cable modem with a wired ethernet internet connection, what do i need to buy/do so that I can have my nintendo wii and my desktop pc wirelessly connected to the internet in my home?
How do I create a wireless home network for sharing files and a printer? I am trying to create a file sharing network between a wireless desktop and hardwired laptop. Also later I may want to add another wireless laptop. I have given both computers the same workgroup name and run the windows home network wizard but I cannot connect to either computer. Neither one seems to recognize the other. I have heard some people talk about switches. If this is what I need to fix it please explain to me what a switch is and how hard it is going to be to set one up.
How do I set up a wireless home network with a desktop, laptop and printers with a wireless firewall router? We have a laptop and desktop- both used for business and personal use. We would like to have a wireless home network, with our printer, so the desktop and the laptop can connect to the same thing, with our printer. We were thinking something along the lines of two user profiles- one business and one personal- and both computers can connect to each of these profiles, and the files can be sort of 'synchronised' whenever the laptop is in range- incase it has been taken away from home for business use. We have a wireless firewall router. One of the two printers is wireless (bluetooth) and the laptop is bluetooth, if that makes any difference. The only problem is we have no real idea how to do this! Is this possible? Mail me with step by step instructions if the answer thing is not sufficient. Any thing would be a great help!
How can I improve my home network wireless speed? My home network is using a Dlink 624 with firmware 2.76 and my remote computer is using a Belkin USB G version F5D7050. When I log onto the computer and it get on the wireless signal it shows as VERY GOOD and 56Mbps but then it drops to 18-24. I figured that it would be better than my 11Mbps antenna i had but it seems slower? Any suggestion? Oh, it's about 40 feeet from the Dlink-single level house on channel 11 with extended range mode on and Qos enabled also. Long preamble and CTS in auto. Mu internet is WAY slower with the Belkin G adaptor than it was with the B adaptor i had? Looking at 10-20 seconds to load a page campared to 1-10 with the B ? Just can't figure it out????
How can i connect back to my wireless home network? I just moved back home from college for the summer and i can't get my computer to connect to our wireless home network. We used an ethernet connection at the dorms but i can't seem to connect to the internet at all. I don't know what to do now.
What do I need to look for when selecting a wireless router for a home network? I recently purchased a used laptop with 802.11b wireless capability. I would like to set up a wireless home network with my desktop still connected via cable and a wireless router to connect my laptop. My house has three floors, with my desktop and internet connection in the basement. I will be using the laptop mostly on the main floor. I see routers with prices ranging from $25 to nearly $200. How do I select one that will be reliable without buying way more than I will need? Thanks for any advice or recommendations.
How can network users use V.92 modem on hold on a wireless home network? Greetings, I have an ad-hoc wireless network in my home and need remote modem-on-hold. I live in a rural area where there are far more deer than people, with no chance of a broadband connection being offered by my phone company. My wife and I both run businesses out of our home that require us to be on the internet a great deal through our 56k dialup connection. Clients occasionally call, and though we have the "Callwave" service and tried similar services they are not really what we need. I am looking for a way that any of the computers on the network can use the modem-on-hold v.92 feature so that any home network user can answer the call by voice even though the modem in use is on the network server as an ICS internet gateway. All computers are running XP Pro. Anyone know how this can be done? Thanks in advance
Having trouble connecting my laptop to my home wireless network.? I just bought a used HP Pavilion ze4500. I powered it on and everything seems to be fine. It recognizes my home wireless network, but when I try to connect, it doesn't. My network is unsecured. The laptop wireless connection shows it is a Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. I have Verizon DSL with a Westell Versalink 327W wireless router. I have 2 computers hooked up to the router via ethernet cables and my Xbox 360 is hooked up to my wireless network via the Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter. The 360 was extremely simple to hook up. It pretty much did everything on it's own. I also managed to get my Sony PSP to connect to it...again virtually on it's own. I am VERY inexperienced with wireless networks, so any help would be appreciated. I would also appreciate step by step instructions if you tell me to go in and change something. Maybe I should secure the network? Thanks. How exactly do I add encryption? Ok, I have the network secured. The laptop recognizes the network as being secured. When I try to connect, I put in the key and it tries to connect, but it still can't. I don't understand why it sees it but can't connect to it. Any other suggestions?
How can you tell what IP you are on your wireless home network? Will it be the same for the same computer? I tried going to run>ipconfig and it shows a window for less than a second and then disappears. Why would this happen? Is there another way to see what your IP is on your wireless network? I'm using a Belkin router, so I know it should be in the form of 192.168.2.??? Also, will I get the same IP on my local network everytime I get online with the same computer? Thanks for all the help! Thanks for the help! I made the stupid mistake run>ipconfig instead of run>cmd>ipconfig
Why is my wireless home network not showing up? Just today my wireless network name disappeared off of my laptop. My tivo and Wii still see the network and are working fine. Also, my laptop is able to pick up my neigbors networks just fine. I have tried a few basic things, such as unplugging the modem/router, rebooting the computer, and using the "repair" function in windows. Any ideas? Thanks!
How do I protect my home wireless network from being used by neighbors? I have cable internet and a linksys wireless router to connect my desk and family computers. The installation tech for the cable modem said I had such a good connection with the wireless system that in my small development, other wireless cards might accidentally link with my network. How do I prevent this?
How to set up a home wireless network? i haven't bought any equipment. i plan to use it for file-sharing such as games. but i read i have to buy (network cards) but i don't know if it is the same as (network adapters). i don't know how to set up all the router wiring from my broadband internet connection. i have three unused computers which i plan to use. but the Access Point, wiring, configuration, and everything related seems difficult. i would really appreciate step-by-step instructions WITH NO DIFFICULT WORDS I WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND throughout the connection of my wireless network of three computers using high speed internet from TWC(timewarnercable). I have read many articles about this but i just don't find the easiest way of setting up my three computers using routers, network cards, ethernet connections, and configuration.
What do I need to set up a home wireless network? I apologize because my knowledge here is very limited. I have a work laptop and a home desktop that was purchased 2 years ago. I know it's about $70 to purchase a linksys router. What else will I need? Probably a network card for my desktop I'm guessing. What are the other expenses that go into this? Is there a monthly charge? Like I said, I have no idea what I'm doing and where to start!
If I want to add a wireless IP Camera to my existing home wireless network, what is the easiest way to do it? Should I use a wireless repeater to connect the IP camera to the existing wireless network, or some other type of device? The existing network is used mainly for internet, but I'd like to get some video from a garage that is located about 100 feet from my main house. VERY IMPORTANT! Wireless home network? How do I set up a wirelss network in my home? I have a Belkin 54g wireless router as an access point and a U.S. Robotics MAXg network card in my computer. I ran the wireless network wizard and it wouldn't work. It said to plug my flash drive into the router which I have no idea how to do because there is no USB jack in the router. Then I tried doing it without the flash drive and it said I would have to enter numbers in to the router, which, I don't get how I would do that. Do I have to have a certain type of wireless router? Please if you can, run me through how to set this up. Thanks
How do I setup a wireless home network? I have wireless internet already.? A friend wants me to help her. She has a comp and a laptop that she want to connect. I think the laptop comes with a build-in wireless 802.11bg. When I check her laptop to see want I need to setup, it said to have wireless network adaptor, one for each computer on my network, and a wireless router. Home wireless network? Hi there, I have a security enabled wireless network setup at home. I have a desktop (Vista) and a laptop (XP SP2) connected to it, both with a wireless card. The laptop is usually connected to my printer with a USB cable. My questions are: 1. How can I set both computers up so that one can see the other (and vica versa)? They are on the same wireless network, so I assume this can be done. Could this also mean that I could play my music files located on my laptop - on my other computer over the wireless network? 2. Could I also be printing from my desktop over the wireless network through my laptop (connected to the printer)? That would be REALLY nice! Thanks for any pointer! I appreciate your help! Gyula

Cannot detect home wireless network (D-Link DI-524)? I'm trying to set up a home wireless network using the wireless router D-Link DI-524. I was able to set it up and configure it so that I can now access the Internet using a wired Ethernet connection through one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router (i.e., PC to D-Link to Cable Modem to Internet). However, when I try to detect the wireless network that I configured using "View Available Wireless Networks" in Windows, I can't see the SSID name that I used in the configuration steps. I am, however, able to see all of my neighbors' wireless networks. I was wondering if similar things have happened to others, and how you went about to fix it. Much thanks.
Home Wireless Network help please!!!!? Hi guys, i have a home wireless network. My ISP is orange broadband. I have 2 computers, one laptop and also my printer connected to the network. I should be gettin 8MB speed but on my computers, i only get 2MB each. However orange say that i should get 8MB speed. Is this becasue i have 2 computers and a laptop connected to the network? Does a network share out the speed with everything connected to it? If yes, how do i stop this from happening, as i don't need a speed of 2MB on my laptop and i hardly use it. Also does the printer take a speed of 2MB aswell? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks THANKS FOR RESPONSE: JUST TO CLEAR THINGS UP: I HAVE THIS PACKAGE: http://orange.co.uk/time/broadbandmax/ ALSO AT ANY TIME, ON ONE COMPUTER THE SPEED IS ALWAYS 2MB (IT SAYS THIS AT THE BOTTOM ON WINDOWS TASKBAR) ALSO IF ONLY ONE COMPUTER IS USING THE INTERNET, IT STILL ONLY GETS 2MB SPEED
I cant connect to my home wireless network. Help? I bought a new computer with Windows XP Pro and i've installed a SMC 802.11g Turbo 108Mbps Wireless PCI Card in my system. I've already installed its driver using the CD given and so far i'm not able to connect my computer to an existing wireless network at home. My wireless network consist of 1 Linksys wireless access point. My sister has a computer with a Linksys wireless adapter(using USB) that is already successfully able to connect in our wireless network. Is it possible that since i'm using SMC and the network is made up of Linksys products, it couldnt get connected? I've tried using their EZ Connect g for connection and had selected the correct network name(SSID) and Channel but when i hit the 'Apply Changes' button, nothing happens except at the Link Information, it switches from 'Associated' to 'Not Associated' simultaneously on the status field. The 'Radio' is On but i cant seem to be connected. Could someone please help guide me.
HELP! problem with home wireless network!? First off, my home wireless network was working great then the signal kept going in and out on my laptop. So I tried messing around with the network wizard and stuff on the main computer. I think I may have set up an extra unsecure wireless network because on my laptop its picking that up. MY QUESTION IS: how do I delete that unsecure network to prevent from others getting into it???? and what do you think is causing the signal to go in and out and how can I fix that?????? please use common words, im not very computer savy.
Fail to connect to home wireless network? I have laptop "IBM ThinkPad T41" with build-in wireless adapter, "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter", it has no problem to connect to my home wireless network (Linksys router), it worked fine until yesterday, when I rebooted DSL modem, wireless router and my computer, after that it would not make connection, but if I use Linksys wireless card for laptop, it has no problem to connect. I wonder how I can debug and find out what is wrong? where I should look at? any log file I can examine? Thanks.
Does WiFi the same thing as my home wireless network switch thing? I know there are free public WiFi hotspots in like cities and stuff, but im wondering if it is the same as my home Wireless network? Basically, can a Pocket PC that has WiFi connect to my wireless network, so i can go online? On new egg.com, im looking at pocket Pc's and i see they either have WiFi, or WirelessLAN. How to set new laptop so it will pick up my home wireless network connection? We have a wired/wireless network already set up here in our home, with a laptop wireless connected to it, and two wired desktops connected as well. This network was set up by the guys at Circuit City. I bought a used laptop with XP and it has a wireless network card. When I plug it into the network via the Ethernet cable (wired)... the internet works, and we can share files, etc. But when I try to pick up the wireless signal, it won't work. What might I have forgotten to do? Should I be using the drivers that go with the network card....? Or... do I have to reset the connection so that it uses the wireless router's driver? It seems to me that with a WiFi card, it should pick up any wireless network in the area, so why won't it pick up the one here in our home?
Please help me with my wireless network at home? Hi. I have a notebook computer with a dlink 56mb/s "g" compatible wireless card. It works great at libraries, ect where they have wifi. I'm trying to set up a home wireless network but am getting a bit stuck. Computer attached to my cable modem runs windows xp home edition. The router is a lynksys 56mb/s "g" router. I have it hooked up to the main computer, and have no problem getting to the net with the main computer, so the router is hooked up and working properly. Now, with my laptop, it seems to be connecting to my "homenetwork", but when I hit internet explorer, I get an error message "can not find server". Is there something else I need to do? My notebook runs windows 2000.

HELP! My brand new MacBook Pro is wreaking havoc on my home wireless network! How do I make it stop? I was very pleased to recently get a new MacBook Pro... But ever since brought the damn thing home, it can barely stay online for more than a few minutes (...that is, when it is successful in connecting AT ALL), and if that's not enough, it knocks all the other machines in the house OFF the network, causing me to have to reboot the router far more than I should ever have to. Everything was fine before the arrival of the MacBook. My wireless router is a LinkSys WRT54G V5 Wireless G Router. I have updated the Firmware on the router a few times, but not since the arrival of the MacBook (perhaps I should check for an update?). I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on this.

Wireless home network setup? I have two desktop computers (both on WinXP-Pro SP2), and both are on Broadband using the same connection. Computer#1 is connected to a DLink DI-524 wireless router via ethernet, which in-turn is connected to a DLink DSL-502T single-user adsl modem. Computer#2 is connected to the DI-524 via a DLink DWL-G122 wireless usb adapter. As I say, both computers can get online at the same time, but I am having great trouble getting the two computers to talk to each other. Basically I use both computers to do the same job, and only my current location dictates what computer I use at the time. However, currently I have to transfer files between the two via a usb flash-drive. Surely I must be able to get these two computers to talk to each other wirelessly so that I can utilise the files I want to use ... regardless of which computer I'm using at the time (nb both computers are always on). Can someone give me some pointers to getting my wireless home network setup?
Wireless Home Network? We have a 2700HG-B 2Wire modem provided by AT&T and it is connected to our Dell 8100 pentium 4 and we want to create a wireless network to a Dell Laptop Latitude CPx with this modem Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56 What do we need and how we create the wireless network connection?
Wireless Home Network cannot find the Internet? I have a wireless home network, the Broadband Modem is conncted using Ethernet cable to my Hub which is then connected to my Computer. The Internet works fine for the PC and I have zero problems with it. However, when I try to acess the Internet using a network adaptor on my laptop I have problems. The adaptor can associate with the access point fine, and the signal is strong. However,it then says the Internet cannot be found, even though it is working fine with the PC. I have restarted everything, refreshed connections etc, the passwords are all corect and they are all on the same channel. It does find the Internet sporadically forabout a minute then it dies again for about hours. I rang the company and used their website but they were no help. The PC and Laptop are both running Windows XP and are both up to date (SP2 and all fixes etc). Anyone have any ideas? Well, here are the extra details. Laptop is using a network adapter connected using a USB cable. The adapter is a linksys WUSB54GR and and the access point is a Linksys WAP54G. It was bought separately from the modem and is the access point/hub. Distance between the access point and the adapter does not affet the problem, I have tried it 3cms apart and 20m apart. Besides, in my question I did say that they are associating fine. I am using WEP 64bit encryption, using standard zone alarm free firewall (but I had he same problem when running windows firewall both on and off). I have DHCP and the laptop and PC are both set to find it automatically. (Also, why a I being a baby?! Or you just a flamer with no life?) BTW, the Internet is fine and running on the PC and laptop when the router/hub/access point is physically connected to either of them, it i just when I am trying to access it wirelessly.
How to set up Home network with wireless desktop? Hello, I need help? I set up a home network as follows: 1)The cable wire located in my bedroom is connected "from" the wall "to" my motorola cable modem. 2) One end of an ethernet cable is connected "from" the cable modem, and the other end of the same ethernet connected "to" a d-link wireless router . 3) One end of 2nd ethernet cable is connected "from" the wireless router "to" the ethernet "slot" of my Desktop PC. Now I want to use my desktop, but not in my bebroom since I think it must stay there always wired right? Does a PC has to be wired somewhere at the central wireless network location for the network to function properly? oR can the router does it alone? My question is that someone told me that I can just leave the wireless router in my BRoom and simple move the desktop to maybe near the kitchen and use a "USB desktop wireless" card to use the Desktop wirelessly..is that possible? If it's possible, what's a good USB desktop wireless card? Thanks Also, the reason that I had set up my network central location in my bedroom is that the bedroom has the best Internet reception. The connection is more reliable there since it's the closest to the cable telephone pole. The cable guy installed cable wires from the cable telephone pole to all around my house with a lot of cable splitters, which maybe the problem. So, the cable reception is very weak in the all other rooms causing the Internet connection to drop very frequenty driving me crazy. Does anyone know if cable splitters cause their internet connection to drop or cause weak internet connections because of distance between the pole or cable splitters? I don't want to keep calling the cable company to fix this. Is there a quick do it your self solution for me such as re-running the cable wires, buying better cable splitters in order to avoid getting constantly disconnected? Thanks in advance To respond to the 1st answer..I already have a wireless router
Can I set up a wireless home network if my main pc is running Windows XP Home? OK, my set-up is as follows: I have a PC running Windows XP Home edition connected via a cable to a wireless router. I have a laptop running Windows XP Pro with a wifi card which can pick up the internet wirelessly from the wireless router. What I want is to access the data on my PC on my laptop. I have switched on file sharing, I have run the network wizards, etc, etc. My laptop can 'see' my PC but not access any drives/fiels, my PC sees nothing!!! I have been told that the problem is due to only having Home on my PC - do you think this is correct? If not, any other ideas??? thanks
Help!My XP Home SP2 com is having difficulty connecting to the wireless home network. Other machines are ok.Y? I have 2 laptops (1 win2k, 1 XP home) and a PC (win2k) connecting to the wireless home network (all wirelessly). I checked the DHCP of the wireless router, it is issuing 10 IP addresses so it should be fine. The xp home laptop is having difficulty connecting to the router. It says limited or no connectivity. This laptop is brand new. I can browse and can see the router. I am using passphrase. I have set the wireless adapter to use Open and WEP setting on the adapter. Can someone let me know what is wrong?
