Internet Rudeness
The Internet is full of places for people to express themselves in a multitude of ways. They can show off pictures of things they’ve made, post their intimate details on blogs, post in forum threads, and even showcase their talents via video sharing sites such as YouTube.
People show their not so angelic side when it comes to sharing things about themselves. Many behave differently than they would if they were speaking to someone in person, and become a bit more rude.
“Troll” is a widely used term that you may have come across online. Many people want to make others angry and cause them to respond in a nasty manner so they post things that may be controversial or hurtful. These are people that thrive off of upsetting others.
To date, no research has been undertaken to determine what makes individuals “troll”. Besides, if studies were conducted about this issue, how could you ascertain the accuracy of the data? You’re looking at a group of people trying to be lost in a sea of nameless faces.
People who utilize YouTube may experience different feeling than if they were simply adding a comment in a strictly text based venue. With YouTube, the user is more exposed to the public as they’re actually showing themselves on camera. This makes it easier to figure out who is displaying such rudeness to the public by using a video to do it. It doesn’t need to just be mean and hurtful comments coming from the trolls either. Other comments will be vulgar in nature.
Whether it’s to blow off steam or venting frustration or just misdirected anger, Internet trolls are everywhere. Just because there is a sense of anonymity on the Internet, people should quit feeling that it turns a place for social interaction and information into a giant playground. This is a myth that could potentially lead to harm.
Anyone who is under the assumption that they will not be discovered, is sadly mistaken, as there are simple online tools to uncover a person’s identity. Sites such as fast-ip-search.com/241/index.htm allow users to plug in an IP address and locate it on a map. With one sequence of numbers and one click of the mouse, your location can be mapped. We are never sure of who we are dealing with on the Internet and their mindset. Likewise, you have no idea what could cause them to crack.
Your best response to a troll’s comments is to locate a representative of the website to report them to. Many places want to crack down on the hurtful posting and will quickly ban and disable these trolls’ accounts. We do not need to accept rudeness as normal online behavior. A good rule is that if you wouldn’t say it to a person’s face, you shouldn’t be posting it online.
