Blackberry Torch – A Look At Its Specifications And Features
There are loads of smartphones on the market at the moment, all aimed at ‘regular consumers’. One of these is the Blackberry Torch from Research in Motion, who are generally more familiar with making business-friendly products. How does the Torch stack up? Well, user options have been increased with the installation of a touchscreen alongside the normal Blackberry trackerpad. Another good feature is being able to arrange your apps however you want and the look and feel of the phone is improved by superior iconography.
A first for the Blackberry, the Torch is a sliding phone but other than that, the hardware is similar to previous efforts, making the design familiar. The full QWERTY keyboard is easy to use, as it normally is on the Blackberry, but this does contribute to a slight bulky feel, particularly when compared with the ultra slim iPhone. Other than that, it’s an attractive phone with a touchscreen measuring 3.2inches. You can also operate the phone via the normal Blackberry methods, which is useful if you like to have options.
Another bonus is the excellent call quality and great signal, which is always useful when looking to make phone calls. This is often seen as one of RIM’s best features and the Torch doesn’t disappoint. The main qualm is the slightly shrill sound of the speakerphone if you have the volume up too high, but other than that it’s a god feature. The sound on calls is excellent and it’s extremely quick and pain free to make calls, which is always a good thing.
In terms of the camera, the Torch comes with an LED flash and 5 megapixel camera. The photography process has undoubtedly been upgraded to make it more seamless than it was on previous Blackberry devices, but there’s nothing particularly special about the lens. You can choose from a range of camera options but the default mode isn’t great for steady-looking photos. Overall, the phone is good at capturing images, particularly in single shot mode as opposed to the pre-set ‘continuous’, but colors look somewhat washed-out.
One of the main draws of any Blackberry is the mail and messaging facilities, so these were expected to be good on the Blackberry Torch. If you’re already a fan of the Blackberry, then the facilities are much improved, but if you’re not, you may not be convinced by the Torch. It’s easy to set up email on the Torch, which is great, but if you make changes on your account online, it takes ages for the phone to pick up on it. Overall, a good phone with some flaws.
